Crux Subsurface – Ebey Slough Transmission Line Relocation

Landau Associates provided design-phase geotechnical engineering services related to the relocation of portions of two parallel Puget Sound Energy transmission lines that cross approximately 1 mile of diked pasture land adjacent to Ebey Slough near Everett, Washington.  This relocation would allow Snohomish County to breach the dike along Ebey Slough to create a new intertidal habitat area. The site is underlain by very soft alluvial silt and clay deposits that contain significant amounts of organic material, and is generally covered most of the year to shallow depths by water. Site conditions and the proposed use of the site precluded land-based construction methods. The proposed pole foundations will consist of micropiles extending to 100 ft below grade. Given the complexity of the soil structure under these loading conditions, the foundation analysis was completed using a three-dimensional numerical analysis (FLAC-3D), based in part on results of a site-specific response analysis.
