Landau Associates Wins Best in State Engineering Excellence Silver Award for Landfill Gas Mitigation System Design and Implementation

BELLEVUE, WA  January 23, 2015 – The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Washington has selected Landau Associates to receive a Silver Engineering Excellence Award for the design and implementation of a landfill gas control (LFG) system for the Bremerton Housing Authority Bay Vista redevelopment. The award was presented at the organization’s annual gala on January 23, 2015, at the Westin Bellevue.

The 83-acre mixed-use Bay Vista redevelopment project will include the creation of Periwinkle Park, located above the 3-acre former Westpark Landfill, within the former Westpark public housing area in Bremerton, Washington. Landau Associates designed and implemented a control system to prevent landfill gas from reaching concentrations of concern or posing a migration risk to residential units adjacent to Periwinkle Park by capturing, treating, and ventilating LFG to the atmosphere. The project was recognized by the ACEC in part for its complexity. The system design is a unique hybrid application of existing technology (passive and active LFG control) with a prescriptive step-down approach for moving from active to passive ventilation.

The system design is consistent with Bremerton Housing Authority’s development approach, which includes consideration of long-term sustainability and green building strategies. The entire system was constructed using locally available hardware, used equipment, and non-specialty local contractors, resulting in an easily implementable project with the lowest possible construction costs for Bremerton Housing Authority. The system was designed and constructed following an aggressive implementation schedule to allow Bremerton Housing Authority to safely move forward with their Bay Vista Redevelopment project. The system has been successfully mitigating methane, allowing for safe development in the area, since 2013.

The Engineering Excellence Awards program recognizes the efforts of design professionals and their clients, and is regarded as the “Academy Awards” of Engineering.
